Tannery wastewater is the effluent discharged in the process of leather production. Animal skins are usually salted or soaked with water to make them plump, then the lime is added, flesh and alkali are removed, tannin or chromium is used to tan, and fat is added to soften. Finally, it is dyed and processed into leather. Tannery wastewater mainly comes from the preparation, tanning and dyeing sections. It contains a large amount of protein, fat, mineral salts, suspended substances, sulfide, chromium, vegetable tanning agents and other toxic and harmful substances, which have high biochemical oxygen demand and high toxicity.
Because the composition of tannery wastewater is very complex and contains many toxic substances and high concentration of salt, it is very difficult to treat tannery wastewater.
